There are many more individuals wearing tattoos today than there were only ten years ago and it isn’t just men who are adding artwork to their bodies. Not only are more women getting body art in general, but they are also getting larger, more attention getting tattoo designs on areas of their bodies where they are more visible.
For some women, there may have been a desire to get a tattoo for a long time and they finally decide to “go for it”. For others, getting tattoos is a way of symbolizing their independence or expressing their beliefs. The butterfly tattoo remains the most popular design for women as a symbol of freedom or growth but some just like them because they are pretty to look at.
Although it is getting more common for women to get multiple tattoo designs over a large portion of their bodies, the majority will opt for a single small design such as a flower tattoo or butterfly tattoo, often in an area that is normally kept covered. While men tend to get arm tattoos that they can show off to everyone, women are more likely to choose them as an emotional commitment or something personal that is only shared with their significant other.
For women who choose one of the lower back tattoo designs, which have gained a nickname of “tramp stamps”, there are very different connotations associated with them. Whatever the reason for getting a tattoo whether it is to make a fashion statement or to proudly wear the name of someone special, more women are sporting tattoos than ever before!
